I finally did some performance mods to the 'Vette. Well, when I say "performance", it is extremely minor, but nevertheless, it is still performance. I got a K&N filter and a throttle body air foil. The K&N wasn't too complicated to install, considering I've already changed the air filter once. The air foil, however, was pretty ridiculous. It was supposed to be a 10 minute install. It ended up taking around 40, since they gave me the wrong size retainer for the screw included. So I had to carefully file down the retainer until I got it to the correct size. Anyways, surprisingly, I can actually feel a little increase in power. Its not substantial by any means, but you can definitely feel the difference. Has anyone else here had experience with the air foil? I found it pretty ridiculous that I had to file it. Have a picture of my engine. Sorry about it being a little dirty, I took this picture a while ago.

Bro nice mid engine

JK but srs every little bit helps, especially with airflow. Nothing responds to mods quite as well as an chevy motor

super cool! Can't wait to modify an engine that isn't 2.5 liters and 4 cylinders

It's surprising to come on oppo and see another L98! I'm guessing that's an '86 or '87? I actually noticed a difference with the K&N, do you also have a cut filter lid? That's good for another ~15 HP when paired with a better filter. I haven't done an airfoil but I heard it improves top end power.

She's an '86. Nice to see another C4 guy out there! What do you got?

Yep, when I bought the car, it actually had the cut filter lid. I figured I would finally buck up and get the K&N to go along with it. I'm glad to hear it gives that much power! I figured the filter lid would only give five HP or so. Yeah, the air foil gives a little more power in the higher end. I'm pretty satisfied with it, but I'm hoping it is easier to install for others, since my installation was just annoying.

Yeah, I'm pretty satisfied with it. I really wasn't expecting it to help that much, but I could feel the difference. And you're definitely right there. They are pretty simple to get more HP, granted that you have the money for it.

Thanks! Yeah, they are much more fun than a 2.5 four. 'Vettes are a massive pain to work on, but it is all the more satisfying when you finish.

I have an '85 with a 4+3. Pretty much your car without climate control, ABS, or aluminum heads. We have been the two mutual appreciators of the C4 on here. It's risky business liking them, but some quietly respect them haha. I'll probably do the airfoil at some point, but the P.O. says the car has a mild cam which probably makes up for power lost over 133k miles with mysterious maintenance. It's a fun car and for some mind-boggling reason costs less than a decent foxbody around here!

Still getting 365 hp 420 tq outta the 4 banger (after considerable $$$$ and time put into it obviously)

For some reason I feel that forged pistons, sodium filled valves, and 21 psi of boost would make alot more than 420 tq in a LS as opposed to my EJ

Nice! I always wish I found an '85. Most people don't know that the '85 was faster than any 'Vette until 1993, which I'm sure you know. Also jealous about the 4+3. Only thing I don't like about mine is that it's an auto. Don't get me wrong, I still adore it, but there are some days I wish I got a stick. Actually, since mine is an early build, it doesn't have the aluminum heads, since those came later in '86. I also don't have climate control. In all honesty, I have a pretty weirdly optioned car. The ABS is definitely nice, though.

And its risky, for sure! I never got why people hated the C4 so much. At least its good that some people quietly respect them, I guess. More people should come around to them, in my opinion.

Like I said, I would suggest the air foil, but I would hope it isn't normally as much of a pain. Mine has the factory cam, which isn't bad, but I figured I would get the air foil and the K&N for some cheap horsepower.

I couldn't agree more, I enjoy the hell out of mine. And its nearly the same here! A decent Fox and a decent C4 are nearly the same price. Yet, the Fox is more sought after. Never really understood why anyone would want a Fox over a C4.

Damn! Good work dude! Mine is mostly stock, but even if I had those numbers, its a lot less impressive on a 35o than a 4 banger.

Yeah, they would make a assload of torque in a LS. Mine is the L98, not the LS, but if I had the cash for all those things, mine would also make torque for days.

I have 3.5 years on my build! Not a single hiccup and she's my daily that gets occasionally tracked (Except for the stock clutch who's torque capacity I grossly exceeded haha)

That's pretty funny, as I was kind of wishing I ended up with an '86 for the lower weight! It's ironic how most people think the '85 is a complete dog because they associate it with cross fire injection. They had problems with the early aluminum heads cracking at first, so they came as a mid-year update. Half the fun of the C4 is the fact that they are so unappreciated, I think- no jumping on bandwagons with them! The early ones are the last classic corvettes and first modern ones in a lot of ways. The 700R4 is a great auto, cutting edge at the time, and has torque converter lockup in 2nd-4th; while using and maintaining the 4+3 is an experience in and of itself, the automatic really turns it into a great cruiser. People are down on them now, but C4s will come around eventually with 80s nostalgia and time.

I don't blame you. They're actually very entertaining cars. As for pricing, it really depends what year you're looking for. The earlier C4s are obviously the cheapest, and they get more expensive the younger they get. The cheapest C4 is the '84, but I'm sure you know the '84 was the worst C4 because of the Crossfire Injection. Its not a bad car by any means, but they got much better from there on out. I bought mine for $5800, but I got lucky and waited two years to find the right one. You could probably pick up a nice one from anywhere around $5k to $8k, again, depending on the model you want.

Hmm, that's a coincidence for sure! It really is ironic, for sure. I think most of the hate that the C4 gets roots from the '84, sadly. Most people absolutely hate those, but they're just a product of their time. My dad had an auto '84 in the early 90's, and he says that it was one of his favorite cars that he ever owned.

Good point with that. It is fun sometimes that they are so underappreciated. There is almost an element of surprise to them, in my opinion. No one expects them to be good cars, since they mostly get a bad rep.

I couldn't agree more with you there. I personally think C4s are the last Corvettes that can really have an element of nostalgia to them. I think they have hit their lowest point right now, and I hope that they will be a little more respected in the future. I love the 80's nostalgia that goes along with the C4. For added nostalgia, I even have a collection of hair metal cassettes for mine. You know, just because.

I'm pretty satisfied with my 700R4 so far. It hasn't given me any fuss, and, as you said, makes a fantastic cruiser. 98% of the time I love it. There are always those few moments for me that I wish I had a stick, though.

At the same time I kind of want a C5 too, those can be had for low teens.

How hard is it to work on a Vette?

Kinja'd!!! Tuned-Port-Injected-Rage > AM3R
08/16/2014 at 00:28

Kinja'd!!!0

Well, the C5 is definitely the better car, no doubt about that. I personally think the C4 is a better looking car, and it has been proven to be a better handling car (oddly), but in terms of all-around bang-for-your-buck, the C5 is nearly impossible to beat. That being said, with the money saved buying a C4, you could mod it to be as fast as most C5s. All up to what you want in a 'Vette, though.

I'm going to be honest with you, it is not too fun. There are definitely worse things to work on, but they are a pretty big pain in the ass. It took me 3 hours to change a set of spark plugs on mine. All part of the experience, I guess.

Jeeze, what makes it so annoying to work on?

I'm more of a fan of the C5. A C5 targa would be amazing.

Just look at all of the hoses sprawled all over the place. It is all very congested. Top that off with GM not being able to decide on what system of measurement they want to use. So some of it is metric, and some of it is English. Just about everything on a Corvette is a pain. It took me a whole day to put new anti-rattle window pads on. Like I said, though, it is all part of the experience. It leaves you all the more proud when you get done.

I don't blame you. I also love the C5. I'm just kind of biased towards the C4 a bit. A C5 targa would be a phenomenal car to have.

Latest reply in the world, been to upset to read any of this oppo stuff because i lost my license due to having fairly frequent seizures all of the sudden.

LOVE my car, sad to have to put her away at my parents (dont trust myself to keep it at my house) but my father drives her up to temp, and i trust his mechanical sympathy (32 year mechanical engineer phd in physics witchcraft) and i dont have to worry about him forgetting, cuz he absolutely loves driving it, and he never breaks 3200 RPM. Poor guy drives a 09 sebring powered by a hairdryer

heres a link to my cars history of youre interested, but dont feel like you have to read it
